Its perch above beautiful Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park makes the setting of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium almost as stunning as the sea life inside. A touch tank expert was on hand to answer any questions and enforce the rules (proper touching technique and such). Why: The world’s largest collection of Southern California marine life is on display in a Frank Gehrydesigned building.
Our visit started at the Aquarium’s most popular attraction, the Tidepool Touch Tank, which contains rocky shore marine life such as sea stars, anemones and sea urchins. You have a unique opportunity to see how creatures adapt to survive along the rocky shores, sand and mud, and in the open ocean. What I found most interesting is that each of the displays shows how the animals and plants featured are adapted to protect themselves, obtain food and reproduce. There is a hands-on tidepool touch tank, numerous traditional viewing tanks, museum collections and other interpretive displays. The grounds are made up of an Exhibit Hall, Exploration Center, Aquatic Nursery and a Marine Research Library.

The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is packed full of creatures that call the Southern California coastal waters home. What’s even better is that it’s located within Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park, which offers plenty of places to explore outside, like Point Fermin State Marine Park, kelp beds, a coastal native plant garden and a salt marsh.
